47. Thanks for caring

In the last 6 months, I made a big career transition. I took a sensational 90% pay cut to go and do more interesting work that I really care about. I am a School Counselor in an inner city school.

Through this process, I have learned a lot about myself. The transition has required a lot of human defragging. One of the things I have recognized is that I am insanely attracted to people who really care. I have amassed this weird group of work friends from two very different domains (corporate & education) with nothing in common other than me and their ability and willingness to care. About problems worth solving. About humanity. About both. People who never stop caring are my kind of people.

As I work with teenagers who need a #hopedealer, I often draw a horizontal Likert scale and I ask them, how much do you care about [insert topic of concern]? And because teens are unapologetic, they typically tell me the truth.

If we don't care enough, we can't fix a damn thing. #dammit #hell #dammit

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot.

Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” -- Dr. Seuss.
